Open-plan office sucks

“Australian scientists have reviewed a global pool of research into the effect of modern office design, concluding the switch to open-plan has led to lower productivity and higher worker stress.”

This was the same thing I thought and have been arguing with management since I started my career. In fact, this is one of the things I hated when I looked at ThoughtWorks work place. It just sucks, people roaming around talking, all the clicking noise. I’m glad there was some “scientific evidence” for the snobs. When some one wants to write code, he wants you to shut up and be calm. Do it when you see a developer writing code next time. And if you are still wondering why your bosses are  pushing the open-plan here is why they are doing it

“The problem is that employers are always looking for ways to cut costs, and using open-plan designs can save 20 per cent on construction.’
